  • Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony is a sunny celebration filled with folk tunes he heard on a holiday with family. Sergei Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto contrasts a darkly lyrical opening and a vigorous finale, performed here by violinist James Ehnes. To open the program conducted by Elim Chan, the SF Symphony commissioned a new work from Elizabeth Ogonek, whose Sleep & Unremembrance was hailed last season as “a marvelous musical dreamscape” by the San Francisco Chronicle.

  • Sergei Prokofiev’s vibrant Romeo and Juliet depicts the fierce war of the Montagues and Capulets, and, of course, the two star-crossed lovers. Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin is both a tribute to friends lost in combat during World War I and an ode to the sparkling French music of centuries past. Pierre-Laurent Aimard joins Esa-Pekka Salonen and the SF Symphony for Bela Bartók’s Second Piano Concerto, a zany piece filled with Eastern European folk dance, snippets of Baroque music, and lots of drums.

  • Two perennial favorites by Jean Sibelius headline this program led by Dalia Stasevska in her SF Symphony debut. First, Joshua Bell performs Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, one of the greatest showpieces of all time, written by a composer whose first love was the violin. Then, journey through the sun-drenched opening, icy Nordic winds, and defiant national pride of Sibelius’ Second Symphony. The program opens with Anna Meredith’s boldly maximalist Nautilus, which grabs listeners and doesn’t let them look away.
